Hello! My name is Chad Strasser, and I am the show choir director at Brownsburg High School. We are so excited to welcome you next year to the BHS Choir Department. We have 8 choirs and well over 400 students total, which makes us one of the largest high school choir programs you can find. We have also been fortunate to have many competing concert and show choirs, and they have received numerous achievements both at the state level and national level, with us recently winning the last two state championships for mixed concert choir, and a few weeks ago traveling to Show Choir Nationals and placing 2nd in the girls division, and qualifying for the finals mixed division, and placing 4th overall.
I’m reaching out today to talk about incoming freshmen TREBLE voices, and to describe an option to jump right into competitive show choir. Bella Voce is an auditioned, upperclassmen competing show choir/concert choir. We have various rehearsals in the evening, but they are fairly minimal, and we compete throughout the months of February and March as a show choir. Your incoming freshman student can be considered for this by completing the audition process that begins this week. I am visiting all 8th grade choir classes to explain the process, and what I am looking for in potential students. Below is the online audition form that is due Friday, April 17. After listening to all the vocal auditions I will then reach out to students who are being considered, and they will be asked to complete an online dance audition, and a short sight-reading exercise, which will be due within a few days after. The following week final decisions will be made, and parents & students will be notified if they have been selected for Bella Voce. Please note, being able to participate in Bella Voce does allow them to skip a beginning level of high school choir, which is an incredible opportunity. That does mean students and families must be fully committed to attending all practices, performances/competitions, and paying fees ($400-$500 estimate for next year). You must also attend all required parent meetings, or follow our excused absence policy that I will detail and help you through when final decisions are made.
Regardless of the final decisions, please know that all incoming freshmen students will be in a terrific situation, and have ample opportunities to grow and have a wide variety of musical opportunities. All of our beginning choirs work on show choir, concert choir, and perform in nearly as many shows at our school as upper level choirs. All freshmen choirs also receive a PE credit, which can be helpful in the future when planning busy schedules at BHS. We 100% work with students who are involved with many other sports, clubs, and activities. Feel free to visit our choir website for examples of our schedules and performances http://brownsburgchoirs.weebly.com/
If you have any questions about the audition process please reach out at any time. And we are looking forward to working with you next year and hopefully beyond!
